ABSTRACT

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) are the leading causes of progressive dementia related to neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular injuries in elderly populations. Despite decades of research, patients with these conditions still lack minimally invasive, low-cost, and effective diagnostic and treatment methods. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a vital role in AD and PSCI pathology. As they are easily obtained from patients, miRNAs are promising candidates for the diagnosis and treatment of these two disorders. In this study, we performed complete sequencing analysis of miRNAs from 24 participants, split evenly into the PSCI, post-stroke non-cognitive impairment (PSNCI), AD, and normal control (NC) groups. To screen for differentially expressed miRNAs (DE-miRNAs) in patients, we predicted their target genes using bioinformatics analysis. Our analyses identified miRNAs that can distinguish between the investigated disorders; several of them were novel and never previously reported. Their target genes play key roles in multiple signaling pathways that have potential to be modified as a clinical treatment. In conclusion, our study demonstrates the potential of miRNAs and their key target genes in disease management. Further in-depth investigations with larger sample sizes will contribute to the development of precise treatments for AD and PSCI.

ABSTRACT

Photovoltaic devices represent an efficient electricity generation mode. Integrating them into textiles offers exciting opportunities for smart electronic textiles-with the ultimate goal of supplying power for wearable technology-which is poised to change how electronic devices are designed. Many human activities occur indoors, so realizing indoor photovoltaic fibers (IPVFs) that can be woven into textiles to power wearables is critical, although currently unavailable. Here, a dye-sensitized IPVF is constructed by incorporating titanium dioxide nanoparticles into aligned nanotubes to produce close contact and stable interfaces among active layers on a curved fiber substrate, thus presenting efficient charge transport and low charge recombination in the photoanode. With the combination of highly conductive core-sheath Ti/carbon nanotube fiber as a counter electrode, the IPVF shows a certified power conversion efficiency of 25.53% under 1500 lux illuminance. Its performance variation is below 5% after bending, twisting, or pressing for 1000 cycles. These IPVFs are further integrated with fiber batteries as self-charging power textiles, which are demonstrated to effectively supply electricity for wearables, solving the power supply problem in this important direction.

ABSTRACT

With the increase of economic environment uncertainty, it is of great importance to study the linkage and spillover effects of economic policy uncertainty among countries. Especially, this article selects eight countries along the Belt and Road as the core countries (China, Korea, Croatia, India, Russia, Greece, Pakistan, and Singapore) and four countries (Germany, France, Japan, and UK) as the peripheral countries, and then copula technique and mixed-frequency global vector autoregressive model are employed to analyze the correlation and the spillover effect of the economic policy uncertainty (EPU) for the twelve selected countries, respectively. The proposed empirical findings show clearly that the EPU correlation among the eight core Belt and Road countries is stronger and the spillover effect of the core countries to the peripheral countries is statistically significant. As a result, for harmonious and win-win development, the Belt and Road countries should pay a close attention to the EPU, because the stability of the EPU promotes greatly the economy development.

ABSTRACT

After cardiac surgery, tissue damage to the heart may cause adhesion between heart and its surrounding tissues. Post-operative cardiac adhesion may lead to limited normal cardiac function, decreased quality of cardiac surgery, and increased risk of major bleeding during reoperation. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an effective anti-adhesion therapy to overcome cardiac adhesion. An injectable polyzwitterionic lubricant is developed to prevent adhesion between the heart and surrounding tissues and to maintain normal pumping function of the heart. This lubricant is evaluated in a rat heart adhesion model. Poly (2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (i.e., PMPC) polymers are successfully prepared via free radical polymerization of monomer MPC, and the optimal lubricating performance, biocompatibility both in vitro and in vivo is demonstrated. Besides, a rat heart adhesion model is conducted to evaluate the bio-functionality of lubricated PMPC. The results prove that PMPC is a promising lubricant for complete adhesion-prevention. The injectable polyzwitterionic lubricant shows excellent lubricating properties and biocompatibility and can effectively prevent cardiac adhesion.

ABSTRACT

Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE), also known as steroid responsive encephalopathy associated with autoimmune thyroiditis (SREAT), has a variety of clinical manifestations, with various neuropsychiatric characteristics, including tremors, transient aphasia, seizures, altered consciousness, myoclonus, cognitive impairment, and psychiatric manifestations. The hallmark presenting feature is a non-specific encephalopathy characterized by alteration of mental status and consciousness ranging from confusion to coma and impaired cognitive function, while those with cerebellar ataxia as the main manifestation is rare. We reported a case of Hashimoto's encephalopathy with cerebellar ataxia as the main manifestation, elevated anti-thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO/TG), and normal thyroid function. The symptoms of cerebellar ataxia improved after steroid treatment. Meanwhile, we reviewed the clinical features of 20 representative cases of HE with cerebellar ataxia as the core symptoms. In conclusion, based on our case findings and literature review, the diagnosis of HE should be suspected in cases of encephalopathy without an obvious cause, to quickly start an effective treatment.

ABSTRACT

Background and aims: Recently, various hemocyte and blood cell ratios have garnered researchers' attention, as a low-cost, widely prevalent, and easy-to-measure index for diagnosing and predicting disease. Therefore, we sought to investigate the effect and predictive value of the peripheral blood neutrophil percentage and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in the acute phase of ischemic stroke (AIS) in post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI). Methods: We selected 454 patients with mild AIS and acquired general clinical data. The patients were divided into PSCI and post-stroke no cognitive impairment (PSNCI) groups according to their Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) scores. We assessed whether there were differences in clinical data, peripheral blood neutrophil percentage, and NLR values between the different groups. We also analyzed the independent influences on the occurrence of PSCI using a binary logistic regression. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to analyze the predictive value of the above inflammatory indicators and models containing different inflammatory indicators for PSCI. Results: In total, 454 patients were included, of whom 253 (55.7%) patients were in the PSCI group, with a mean age of 62.15 ± 7.34 years and median neutrophil percentage and NLR of 0.64 (0.32-0.95) and 2.39 (0.71-54.46), respectively. Both neutrophil percentage (adjusted OR = 1.025; 95% confidence interval: 1.005-1.406) and NLR as a categorical variable (Q5, adjusted OR = 2.167; 95% CI: 1.127-4.166) were independent risk factors for PSCI, and the Q5 group (NLR ≥ 4.05) had significantly worse overall cognition and executive function. Conclusions: Neutrophil percentage and NLR in the acute phase of AIS were independently associated with PSCI, and a high NLR was strongly associated with executive function. In addition, neutrophil percentage and NLR have diagnostic values for PSCI.

ABSTRACT

It is a great challenge to achieve robustly bonded, fully covered, and nanoscaled coating on the surface of electrospun nanofibers. Herein, we develop a controllable, facile, and versatile strategy to in-situ grow superlubricated nano-skin (SLNS) on the single electrospun nanofiber. Specifically, zwitterionic polymer chains are generated from the nanofiber subsurface in an inside-out way, which consequently form a robust network interpenetrating with the polymeric chains of the nanofiber matrix. The nanofibers with SLNS are superlubricated with the coefficient of friction (COF) lower than 0.025, which is about 16-fold of reduction than the original nanofibers. The time-COF plot is very stable after 12, 000 cycles of friction test, and no abrasion is observed. Additionally, the developed nanofibrous membranes possess favorable tensile property and biocompatibility. Furthermore, the nanofibrous membranes with SLNS achieve prevention of post-operative adhesion, which is confirmed in both rat tendon adhesion model and abdominal adhesion model. Compared with clinically-used antiadhesive membranes such as Interceed and DK-film, our nanofibrous membranes are not only more effective but also have the advantage of lower production cost. Therefore, this study demonstrates a potential of the superlubricated nanofibrous membranes in-situ grown based on a SLNS strategy for achieving prevention of post-operative adhesion in clinics.

ABSTRACT

Vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) is a neurodegenerative disease that is recognized as the second leading cause of dementia after Alzheimer's disease (AD). The underlying pathological mechanism of VCID include crebromicrovascular dysfunction, blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, neuroinflammation, capillary rarefaction, and microhemorrhages, etc. Despite the high incidence of VCID, no effective therapies are currently available for preventing or delaying its progression. Recently, pathophysiological microRNAs (miRNAs) in VCID have shown promise as novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Studies have revealed that miRNAs can regulate the function of the BBB, affect apoptosis and oxidative stress (OS) in the central nervous system, and modulate neuroinflammation and neurodifferentiation. Thus, this review summarizes recent findings on VCID and miRNAs, focusing on their correlation and contribution to the development of VCID pathology.

ABSTRACT

Sluggish CO2 reduction/evolution kinetics at cathodes seriously impede the realistic applications of Li-CO2 batteries. Herein, synergistic photoelectric effect and plasmonic interaction are introduced to accelerate CO2 reduction/evolution reactions by designing a silver nanoparticle-decorated titanium dioxide nanotube array cathode. The incident light excites energetic photoelectrons/holes in titanium dioxide to overcome reaction barriers, and induces the intensified electric field around silver nanoparticles to enable effective separation/transfer of photogenerated carriers and a thermodynamically favorable reaction pathway. The resulting Li-CO2 battery demonstrates ultra-low charge voltage of 2.86 V at 0.10 mA cm-2 , good cycling stability with 86.9 % round-trip efficiency after 100 cycles, and high rate capability at 2.0 mA cm-2 . This work offers guidance on rational cathode design for advanced Li-CO2 batteries and beyond.

The repair of large-area irregular bone defects is one of the complex problems in orthopedic clinical treatment. The bone repair scaffolds currently studied include electrospun membrane, hydrogel, bone cement, 3D printed bone tissue scaffolds, etc., among which 3D printed polymer-based scaffolds Bone scaffolds are the most promising for clinical applications. This is because 3D printing is modeled based on the im-aging results of actual bone defects so that the printed scaffolds can perfectly fit the bone defect, and the printed components can be adjusted to promote Osteogenesis. This review introduces a variety of 3D printing technologies and bone healing processes, reviews previous studies on the characteristics of commonly used natural or synthetic polymers, and clinical applications of 3D printed bone tissue scaffolds, analyzes and elaborates the characteristics of ideal bone tissue scaffolds, from t he progress of 3D printing bone tissue scaffolds were summarized in many aspects. The challenges and potential prospects in this direction were discussed.

ABSTRACT

Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) is caused by vascular pathologies, with the spectrum of cognitive disorders ranging from subjective cognitive dysfunction to dementia. Particularly among older adults, cognitive impairment is often complicated with urinary dysfunction (UD); some patients may present with UD before cognitive impairment owing to stroke or even when there are white matter hyperintensities on imaging studies. Patients with cognitive impairment often have both language and movement dysfunction, and thus, UD in patients with VCI can often be underdiagnosed and remain untreated. UD has an impact on the quality of life of patients and caregivers, often leading to poor outcomes. Medical history is an important aspect and should be taken from both patients and their caregivers. Clinical assessment including urinalysis, voiding diary, scales on UD and cognitive impairment, post-void residual volume measurement, uroflowmetry, and (video-) urodynamics should be performed according to indication. Although studies on UD with VCI are few, most of them show that an overactive bladder (OAB) is the most common UD type, and urinary incontinence is the most common symptom. Normal urine storage and micturition in a specific environment are complex processes that require a sophisticated neural network. Although there are many studies on the brain-urinary circuit, the specific circuit involving VCI and UD remains unclear. Currently, there is no disease-modifying pharmacological treatment for cognitive impairment, and anti-acetylcholine drugs, which are commonly used to treat OAB, may cause cognitive impairment, leading to a vicious circle. Therefore, it is important to understand the complex interaction between UD and VCI and formulate individualized treatment plans. This review provides an overview of research advances in clinical features, imaging and pathological characteristics, and treatment options of UD in patients with VCI to increase subject awareness, facilitate research, and improve diagnosis and treatment rates.

BACKGROUND: In the past decades, researchers have demonstrated the critical role of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in the innate immune system. They recognize viral components and trigger immune signal cascades to subsequently promote the activation of the immune system. MAIN BODY: Herpesviridae family members trigger TLRs to elicit cytokines in the process of infection to activate antiviral innate immune responses in host cells. This review aims to clarify the role of TLRs in the innate immunity defense against herpesviridae, and systematically describes the processes of TLR actions and herpesviridae recognition as well as the signal transduction pathways involved. CONCLUSIONS: Future studies of the interactions between TLRs and herpesviridae infections, especially the subsequent signaling pathways, will not only contribute to the planning of effective antiviral therapies but also provide new molecular targets for the development of antiviral drugs.

ABSTRACT

Epidemiological data from the Center of Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) statistics in 2017 show that 10.0 million people around the world became sick with tuberculosis. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is an intracellular parasite that mainly attacks macrophages and inhibits their apoptosis. It can become a long-term infection in humans, causing a series of pathological changes and clinical manifestations. In this review, we summarize innate immunity including the inhibition of antioxidants, the maturation and acidification of phagolysosomes and especially the apoptosis and autophagy of macrophages. Besides, we also elaborate on the adaptive immune response and the formation of granulomas. A thorough understanding of these escape mechanisms is of major importance for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis.
